Gazprom: Nord Stream 1 will be closed for three days at the end of August ‘due to maintenance’

LAST UPDATE: 19.44

The Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which carries natural gas from Russia to Europe, will be shut down from August 31 to September 2 for maintenance work, Russian energy giant Gazprom announced on Friday, according to Russian news agency Ria Novosti.

After the maintenance work is completed, flows of 33 million cubic meters per day will be restored, the company added in its statement.

It is noted that the full capacity of Nord Stream 1 is 167 million cubic meters per day.

The shutdown will cause further disruptions to Europe’s natural gas supplies, with the pipeline already operating at only 20% of capacity and rekindling fears that Russia could cut off supplies altogether ahead of the winter heating season. Gazprom has attributed this to insufficient maintenance and a delayed return from repair of the Siemens turbines used in the gas compressor units of the Portovaya compressor station. Currently, only one of the five turbines is operational.

It is noted that issues have arisen with the return of one of the turbines from Canada, which has imposed sanctions on Gazprom. Local authorities did not issue a permit for its export until July 10 and handed over the equipment to Germany to then be sent to Russia. Its onward transfer requires licenses from EU and UK authorities.
