Russia’s Gazprom said today it has stopped supplying natural gas to neighboring Latvia, accusing it of violating terms on receiving Russian gas, Reuters reported.
Russia has already cut off gas supplies to Poland, Bulgaria, Finland, the Netherlands and Denmark, which have refused to pay for the gas under an order from President Vladimir Putin requiring Russian bank accounts to be set up under of the new settlement system.
Russia has also stopped gas sales to Shell Energy Europe in Germany.
In a statement on Saturday, Gazprom did not specify which conditions on the receipt of natural gas Latvia allegedly violated.
Gazprom’s move comes a day after Latvian energy company Latvijas Gaze said it was buying gas from Russia and paying in euros instead of the rubles required in transactions with Gazprom.
However, a spokesman for Latvijas Gaze said on Friday that the company was buying natural gas from Russia, but not from Gazprom. Latvijas Gaze did not name its supplier, citing business confidentiality.
In March, Putin said the world’s biggest natural gas producer would require countries deemed “unfriendly” over their stance on the conflict in Ukraine to pay for piped gas in rubles.
