Russia’s state-owned gas company Gazprom will increase gas supplies to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, regional governor Anton Alikhanov said yesterday after tensions escalated with neighboring Lithuania.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in May that Gazprom should consider stepping up the flow of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Kaliningrad, an area between Lithuania and Poland, two NATO members.
Alikhanov said the decision to increase gas supplies was made during a meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak. The government said on its website that the two officials discussed enhancing energy security in the area.
Lithuanian authorities this month imposed restrictions on the transport of goods through their areas to Kaliningrad, subject to European sanctions.
In Kaliningrad is the base of the Russian Baltic navy, while in the same area have been developed Russian Iskander missiles, capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
