“GDP preview” rises 0.69% in November after 3 consecutive falls, says BC

Economic activity increased by 0.69% in November 2021 compared to the previous month, after three consecutive months of decline, according to the Central Bank’s Economic Activity Index (IBC-Br), released this Monday (17). ). With the high, the indicator accumulates 4.59% in the first 11 months of last year.

The result for the month was slightly above market expectations, which expected a 0.65% increase. In October, the index had registered a fall of 0.40%.

Compared to November 2020, the increase was 0.43%. In 12 months, the increase is 4.30%.

Known as a kind of “preview of GDP (Gross Domestic Product)”, the index calculated by the BC serves as a parameter to assess the pace of activity over the months.

With 138.08 points, the IBC-Br is below the 139.48 points recorded in February 2020, the last month before the impacts of the pandemic on the Brazilian economy.

Projections indicate that this year economic growth should be at the level of 4%. The number will be officially released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on February 2nd.

Last week, November data from the retail trade and services sectors had already signaled an improvement in the economy, with data above market expectations.

However, economists are still waiting for December data to get a better idea of how the economy performed for the year. It is worth remembering that in the last month of the year, the Ômicron variant had a greater impact on the activity.
