GDP result is positive, but growth is not sustainable, says economist

The 2.9% growth in 2022 of the Brazilian economy, announced this Thursday (2), is “a positive sign”, but only when looking at the amount itself.

This is the assessment of Insper’s economics professor, Juliana Inhasz.

In an interview with CNN Radio she explained that Brazil’s GDP has not grown this way, persistently, for some time now.

“The result of the 4th quarter compared to the 3rd already shows a drop in the economy.”

The pace presented in the year 2022, according to the professor, still makes sense as a reflection of the “resumption of the services sector after the pandemic”, which was expected.

“But we had economic stimulus policies last year that were not persistent, long-term,” he added.

As there was an expiration date, “the last quarter came with a reduction in stimuli, which naturally slows down.”

In addition, Inhasz points out that the macroeconomic situation in Brazil “does not favor sustainable growth.”

“We have uncertainty about the conduct of the economy and doubts regarding the actual policies that will be implemented, whether they will be tightening or stimulating.”

According to the economist, this puts the Brazilian economy “in a waiting status”, while there is no such clarity, with investors waiting for definitions.

At the same time, the international environment “is not favorable to us”, at a time when many of the world’s economies are showing signs of slowing down.

“Brazil, which is a producer of commodities, is a country that suffers a lot from uncertainties that happen outside our borders”.
