Gelato Day 2021: the flavor of the year is Mantecado

It’s always a good time to eat ice cream, but the March 24 there is one more reason: it is the Gelato Day, the European Day of Artisan Gelato, born to promote the quality production, according to tradition, of one of the most loved foods in the world. Each year is an opportunity to taste a different taste, typical of one of the countries of the Union: this year – the ninth edition of the day – the protagonist of the event is the Spaniard Mantecado, a variegated vanilla cream with orange sauce and decorated with dark chocolate flakes.

An ancient cream that tells the food and wine history of Spain (given that it was the Spaniards who imported cocoa from the Americas and are the first European producer of oranges), the mantecado has a perfect contrast between bitter sweet: we can try it in all the ice cream parlors participating in the event (takeaway or with delivery, if you are not in the yellow or white area), or prepare it at home, even without an ice cream maker. «The Mantecado – says Domenico Belmonte – it is one of the most popular flavors in my ice cream shop: it is very popular, and for this reason, in addition to Gelato Day, I decided to offer it all summer ». For VanityFair.it Belmonte simplified his recipe: «It is a cold cream inspired by Mantecado ice cream that can be made with a simple hand blender. After preparing it, it can be eaten immediately, served as a spoon dessert, or it can be cooled in the fridge“. The trick for a perfect result? «Starting with the freshest ingredients of excellent quality, they are always a guarantee. Furthermore, to serve it more elegantly and maintain its consistency, I recommend pouring the freshly made cream into small bowls to put in the fridge and take out as needed ».
