Gender identity shows how people recognize themselves in the world

For a long time, masculine and feminine were the only genders considered by society. On the one hand, there was man and everything that belongs to his universe; on the other the woman and her characteristics.

But, among almost 8 billion people in the world today, is this the only or even the best way to differentiate each one of us?

Athlete Jeremias Daniel also identifies with the female pronoun. She took on long fingernails, her hair is always neat and only wears men’s clothes on competition days in athletics.

“My aunts and my mother talk a lot about how, ever since I was a child, they caught me playing with dolls, I always loved playing with dolls”, he comments, having fun.

The activist and director-president of the National LGBTI Alliance, Toni Reis, says that we live in plurality, but that we are unique, and each one has a way of feeling in the world.

“First, sexual orientation, which is where our drive, our desire goes. Gender identity is how I feel, how I feel in my intimacy and expression, it’s how I express myself to the world, how I present myself to the world.”

Júlio Freitas, who works with recruitment and selection, considers himself cis and gay, that is, he identifies with and is attracted to the male gender.

“Today, even as a privileged cis man, I know that I don’t perform as a straight normative man. There is the issue of my speech mannerisms, since childhood, I know that I perform and I am different. And there are thousands of ways to present yourself to the world,” he said.

Raí reinforces how important dialogue is, and that she needs to be ready for the conflict of discussion of ideas.

“Conflict generates synthesis, generates new ideas. It is important that we manage to make this interaction.”
