General Motors unveils Smart Pod drone: with 50-inch display and without steering wheel

Yesterday, November 22, at the Guangzhou Auto Show, Buick, a well-known subsidiary of the American giant General Motors in China, unveiled the concept of the newest self-driving car, which is in many ways similar to potential competitors in the segment. For example, a drone called Smart Pod lacks a steering wheel – there is no need for it in the vehicle of the future, since the car is completely autonomous. The user will control its movement using voice commands – a rather unusual solution, but the very concept of a car without a steering wheel has already been shown at the same exhibition.

Naturally, Smart Pod is an electric car – apparently, no one even thinks about ICE cars now. And although the company does not yet have an exact answer to the question of mass production, the latest development is based on the Ultium platform – this is a unified “cart” developed by General Motors engineers for electric cars with elements of self-driving driving. That is, theoretically, such a car can be put into production, but probably not in the next couple of years. And even without a steering wheel, the highlight of General Motors knows how to surprise – at least a huge 50-inch touch screen.

To fit such an impressive display in the cabin, the manufacturer decided to implement a sliding structure, plus there is a screen that can display an image on the side windows of the vehicle for even greater immersion. As if it were a movie theater and not a car. The salon also has stylish armchairs, a folding sofa and many laconic decorative elements – there are even flowers in pots, a transparent cupboard and huge panoramic windows with a mirror finish on the outside.
