General strike in West Bank after killing of Hamas deputy leader in Beirut

After the assassination of top Hamas leader in Lebanonschools, universities, banks, restaurants and government offices in the occupied West Bank remained closed today due to a general strike.

The Israeli army is also continuing its raid on the Noor Shams refugee camp near the town of Tulkarem in the northwestern West Bank.

Demonstrations and confrontations with the Israeli army are planned for this afternoon in this occupied Palestinian territory, according to Israeli media reports. The army reportedly raided several locations there overnight.

The vice president of the Hamas Political Bureau, Saleh al-Aruri, was killed in an explosion that occurred yesterday, Tuesday, evening in Beirut. He is the highest-ranking Hamas official to have been deliberately killed during the war.

Suspicions were quickly raised that it may have been a targeted assassination, possibly by the Israeli military or on behalf of Israel. The Israeli armed forces did not comment on the information when asked about it. Following this drone strike, Palestinians held a protest demonstration last night in Al-Aruri's hometown, Arura village, north of Ramallah, as well as in Ramallah itself.

Al-Aruri's mother and sister told the Qatar-based Al Jazeera television channel that they had expected his murder for a long time.

During a raid on the Noor Shams refugee camp in the West Bank, the Israeli army announced that it had arrested six wanted Palestinians and interrogated dozens of others. Terrorists fired explosive devices at the soldiers, the military said, which responded with a drone strike.

The Israeli military operation continued this afternoon in the West Bank. Soldiers arrested four wanted suspects in Kalkia. According to Palestinian information, three people were wounded there by gunfire. The army also seized military equipment in both the Noor Shams camp and Kalkia.

It was initially unclear whether the army's operations were linked to Al-Aruri's murder. The military has been carrying out regular raids in the West Bank and more so since the war in Gaza began, following the deadly attack by Hamas on October 7.

According to Israeli security forces, 2,570 suspects have since been arrested there, 1,300 of whom have ties to Hamas.
