The so-called generation gap is a problem caused by the clash between the views of people who were born at different times. In the classroom, this factor influences the teaching and learning process of students.
This is the conclusion of an article for Jornal da USP, written by the director and professor of the School of Physical Education and Sport at USP, Hugo Tourinho Filho.
In an interview with CNN Radio , the professor evaluated that “the fact that there is a conflict does not mean that it only causes problems. When this is approached in a way that allows learning between generations, it is very interesting to live together.”
Hugo Tourinho Filho highlighted that a young person from Generation Z is the result of the “touch culture”, that is, “they learn by moving, doing. Which is a different culture from the Baby Boomers, who have always been guided by a playbook.”
Generation Z corresponds to people born between the second half of the 1990s to the beginning of the year 2010. A “Baby Boomer” is a person born in the post-World War II period, between 1946 and 1964.
“To have engagement among digital natives, the student has to feel like a protagonist in the process”, pointed out the director. “Without engagement, the student loses the ability to take initiative, and will do something other than attend class.”
Hugo Tourinho explained that the appropriate methodology for teaching can be inspired by two pillars of gamification. “The first is that you have to learn from your mistakes. In other words, the error must be seen as a learning tool”, said the professor. “The second pillar is protagonism. The construction of knowledge must be mutual between student and teacher.”
Another challenge is to overcome the “superficiality of acquired knowledge”, which is often impacted by the large amount of information present in online search engines.
For the USP professor, the answer to this is to focus on approaching the importance of all types of knowledge. “We have to form youth into citizens who are critical and capable of judging. From mathematics to philosophy, all subjects are essential.”
