Generative AI: Expert explains to CNN how the tool is trained

The Ministry of Justice has ordered the company Meta to immediately suspend the use of personal data for training artificial intelligence (AI) systems on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.

The National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) issued a preventive measure on Tuesday (2), after Meta updated its privacy policy, allowing the use of public information and content shared by users to improve its generative AI models, without prior notification.

Arthur Igreja, Digital Security specialist, explained during the program CNN Behind the Scenes that images and information shared by users are used to train generative AI. “Our information is being used broadly and openly to train AI,” said Igreja.

He highlighted that users’ personal data, such as photos, videos and audios posted on social media, are used so that AI can learn patterns and generate similar content.

The expert warned of the risks of rights violations, such as the creation of fake content using a person’s image or voice without their consent. Igreja cited the example of OpenAI, which blocks the generation of images with the names of celebrities to avoid this type of situation. “It’s not just to recommend content, it’s much more than that, it’s to create content,” he explained.

In response to the ruling, Meta said it was “disappointed” and argued that it is “more transparent” than other players in the sector. The company stated that the measure represents a “setback for innovation” and could delay the benefits of generative AI for Brazilians.

If the ANPD determination is not complied with, Meta will be subject to a fine of R$50,000 per day.

The decision by the Ministry of Justice aims to protect users’ rights and prevent abuses in the use of their personal data for commercial purposes or without express consent. The change in Meta’s privacy policy, which allowed the use of data such as texts, stories, reels, photos and images to train generative AI systems, had already generated similar reactions in the European Union, where the company was forced to back down and suspend this practice.
