The phrase is not new and I know that it is almost certain that you have seen, read or heard something about it. It’s just that within companies, everyone is talking, has already talked or will talk about the subject. Using generative artificial intelligence is already routine for practically half of the corporate world according to the survey that Resume Builder carried out in February of this year.
The numbers are, yes, quite worrying if we analyze only the logic of the positions that are going to – and already are – disappearing. Even because, of the companies that are already using the new resource, almost half have already fired people who were left with a somewhat useless position with the arrival of the possibilities brought. As this is generating, in theory, a saving of money, 93% of the CNPJ’s that already use want to use more… of course.
So this business came to destroy the worker’s job? Yes and no. Yes, because think about how generative AI’s can and are already helping companies’ backoffices. Everything that previously needed to be put by a human being in a spreadsheet is increasingly being fed automatically by bots that don’t need to stop to eat.
The AI’s read and automatically allocate incoming, outgoing, purchasing, sales, logistics, service data and, in many cases, already generate reports with analyzes and action suggestions… They are already automating customer service a lot. customer, internal processes, product changes and so on. If you work with this kind of thing, you better watch out.
From this point of view, technology is coming to lay people off, to take people’s place, to put an end to the livelihood of many families – and that is, yes, very sad. But all these arguments run a huge risk of seeming almost childish for a very simple reason… artificial intelligence is not and will never be out of the loop… this is a mission for our natural intelligences.
Think with me: Generative AI’s are ALWAYS the result of what they learn, right?! And who gives these classes to them? People who sweat, have foot odor and shower every day (in theory). To come up with an answer about something, an AI analyzes thousands, sometimes millions of different results.
Everything that any and all AI generates is therefore the average of many other results. Did you understand? The average. IT’S ALWAYS THE AVERAGE! By any chance, were or are they average Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Djamila Ribeiro and everyone who did or does absurd things that revolutionize markets and change human behavior?! Of course not…
Therefore, if you are the person who is scared to death of being replaced at work by a ChatGPT of life, believe me, this says much more about you as a professional than about the technology itself. If something that only produces content with enough quality to pass the year takes your place, it is because, perhaps, you are not doing anything very productive from the point of view of analysis and creation.
Nothing against the back office concept, it is one of the most fundamental types of work within corporations. But, compared to other areas, such as research and development, for example, it is possible that functions such as putting information in a table and generating simple analyzes based on numbers are probably the most repetitive and that demand less creativity in execution.
Of course, this is a reductionist example of what backoffice is, I know, but do you agree that logic makes any sense?! And it’s no use avoiding looking inside. Blaming technology for having swallowed up the work of those who didn’t update themselves or didn’t realize they were doing something outdated is like a taxi driver who blamed the arrival of ride-sharing apps without thinking about how to improve their own work and add value to what they did.
If the customer sees technology as an opportunity to have a better and/or cheaper product or service, he will be against you, period. It’s not easy, I know, but fighting technology, in these cases, is absolutely useless… it’s even immature in some cases.
In the title of this text I say that perhaps Brazilians are not yet ready for this type of discussion because it is too complex to say that professionals need to train themselves in a country with almost 9% of the workforce unemployed and a very low rate of efficiency in investing in education and basic resources for survival in society.
The fact is that the arrival of a technology that changes the way human beings understand work is something that has existed since the payment of soldiers in the Roman Empire was made with portions of the same salt that, in addition to seasoning, served to heal wounds. and preserve food. All this long before there was a frost free side by side refrigerator that spits ice on the metallic door and tells you the news of the day.
And no, generative AIs are not just coming to eliminate many jobs, they are also creating jobs that did not exist until now. Research by Resume Builder also says that over 90% of companies that have open positions are also hiring professionals with ChatGPT experience and familiarity.
In fact, 30% of them want this worker profile urgently. And almost 30% of companies want to hire prompt engineers in 2023. Do you know what this person does? It is who works building and training language models based on generative AI’s. A profession that until very recently did not even exist.
Did you understand? The sentence I’m going to say now has a very strong touch of tavern philosophy, but, for me, it makes perfect sense: The changes that technology causes in the job market follow the logic of the choices we make for our own lives. Because of AI’s many functions will die and many new ones will be born.
Just as hundreds of thousands of people die every day in the world, hundreds of thousands more are born, transforming the sadness of loss into hope for birth. Global growth data show that there are far more people being born than dying every day.
It is up to us, then, the duty of supervising and collecting a surplus balance not only of births and deaths of people… but of places for all these people to work. And even in that, the median backoffice generative artificial intelligence can help – a lot – our brilliant human heads!
