Mahmoud Abdalla had a dream: he wanted to become an accomplished hairdresser and earn well to be able to help parents and siblings left in Egypt. He was only 19, but he had already made a name for himself, in the barber shop where he worked, Ali’s Barber Shop, in via Merano, in Sestri Ponente. Clients asked for him, they appreciated his style. But Mahmoud only earned 1200 euros a month, for many hours of work, always on his feet, and had looked for another barbershop, where they could offer him a better salary. He had found her in Pegli, and had decided to quit.
None of his dreams came true: the 19-year-old’s body was found, in pieces, mutilated, in the waters of the sea. After seven hours of interrogation, his employer, Abdelwahab Ahmed Gamal Kamel, 27, known as Tito, and another employee of the barbershop, Mohamed Ali Abdelghani Ali, known as Bob, 26, confessed to having killed him, despite accusing each other and trying to pretend it was an accident. Their motive is clear: it was «the fear that, in leaving work, clients would follow him».
The carabinieri cross-referenced the images of a series of video surveillance cameras and Mahmoud Abdalla’s telephone records (which made it possible to fix the cells gradually hooked up, and which substantially coincided with the passages filmed by the cameras). They listened to several witnesses. And they concluded that Mahmoud, on the afternoon of Sunday 23 July, entered, together with Tito and Bob, the apartment in via Vado, in Sestri Ponente, which he shared with other employees of the barbershop. Here, according to the indictment, the boy, despite threats from his bosses, he reiterated his willingness to change jobs. The two, with a knife and an awl, would have hit him in the heart, liver and stomach. They would have closed his body in a suitcase and, by taxi, they would have transported it to Chiavari. Once they arrived not far from the mouth of the Entella river, the two would have dismembered the corpse, cutting off the head and hands, and then throwing the remains into the sea. Without thinking that the current would bring them back to shore, along with the truth.
The hands were found first, and allowed the recognition of Mahmoud. The body, carried by the current, was fished up on Monday afternoon between Santa Margherita and Portofino. The head, however, has not yet been recovered.
