Speaking on Italian public television Rai, European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Paolo Gentiloni referred to the consequences of the war in Ukraine, emphasizing the energy chapter and additional tools that Europe must acquire.
Referring to the sanctions against Moscow, Commissioner Gentiloni stressed that “new possibilities are on the table, such as measures related to oil”, but “it must be clarified what the consequences may be and the division between European countries”.
“The European response so far has certainly been positive, with unity, sanctions and assistance to refugees. From an economic point of view, I think we need to work on some additional tools for our energy autonomy,” Gentiloni added.
“We could use some new tools of the Union to support this energy autonomy. It is a process that requires painstaking effort and does not involve the same financial cost for all member states. financial instruments, “the former Italian prime minister explained.
Asked how he sees future developments in Ukraine, Paolo Gentiloni replied: “What worries me most is the duration of the war. The war must end, but for that to happen, Ukraine must endure – not reach tradition – and some big players, like China, to make their presence felt. ”
“We decided not to react militarily, to a military attack, and we did well. This position, however, has a cost. We can not think that we can avoid World War III at any cost, but we will try to limit it as much as we can. “This whole terrible case must end quickly and in the best possible way. It’s something that depends – to some extent – on us,” he concluded.
