The European Union (EU) will discuss in a few weeks whether it needs to borrow money together to meet the challenges posed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, European Finance Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni told Reuters today.
In particular, speaking at the University of Oxford, P. Gentiloni confirmed that “such proposals have been submitted in recent weeks by some European leaders”, but added that he believes that “the decision on such measures will probably not take place at this time.”
The European Commissioner then wondered if “the concern about growing differences between Member States, especially in the euro area, will lead to a decision on a common tool again”, adding that “it is too early to say for sure”.
However, he added that he believed “the real discussion will take place in a few weeks from now, when we have a clearer picture of the economic impact of the Ukrainian crisis” and expressed the view that “I think we can no longer take it out of the table”.
