«Gentleman Jack»: the series on Anne Lister arrives (finally) in Italy

In a world where women could neither drive a carriage nor collect rent because “it was for men”, running into a character like Anne Lister, landowner, entrepreneur, traveler and mountaineer, it had to be a decidedly unique experience. For those unfamiliar with her, we are talking about the first woman to live her homosexuality serenely, ignoring the judgment of others, and also of the first to marry another girl in the history of the United Kingdom in unsuspected times, more precisely in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Its story, which has been handed down to us by a series of diaries consisting of 7,720 pages and proclaimed by Unesco Memory of the world in 2011, could not inspire a TV series that Italy is broadcasting for the first time two years after its debut. . Is called Gentleman Jack – Nobody ever said no to me, is co-produced by BBC One and HBO and will be broadcast exclusively on laF (Sky channel 135) starting from Friday 26 March at 21.10.

To lend the face to this stiff woman, with the collar of her jacket always up, the proud gaze and the baritone voice, is a great Suranne Jones, already winner of the BAFTA award and perfect for highlighting the personality of the Lister, her nose for business, the feelings she tries to manage with a masculine air and the resourcefulness that will lead her to be the first woman to climb Monte Perdido and Vignemale. Born in Halifax, New Yorkshire, in 1791, Anne Lister immediately presents herself as a revolutionary, strong, independent and over the top woman. In Gentleman jack we meet her when she already knows what she wants: it’s 1832 and Anne decides to move to Shibden Hall to strengthen her business and revitalize the historic estate inherited from her uncle. In the country there is nothing but talk of her, especially when she publicly admits that she will never marry a man focusing her attention on Ann Walker (Sophie undle), a rich and charming heiress who can loosen, even for a moment, the armor. black that Lister mounted to defend himself from the hatred of the world.

Gentleman Jack, which has already been renewed for a second season and of which we show you a preview clip above, yes, it is a story of courage, but also of love and a pinch of envy. With her granite personality, always confident attitude and a life experience that has led her for years to travel the world and to weave occasional relationships with other women, Anne Lister represents an uncomfortable voice and presence for those who, like her sister Marian (Gemma Whelan), has always been jealous of the patriarchal order to which the society of the time (but also to some extent that of today) was subjected. Her rejection of the most superficial femininity, the one that passes from the long dress and the finely arranged hair, make her an ante-litteram heroine who, with determination and desire to do, has always fought to be herself and never betray her thoughts (the fact that she is contemporary with Jane Austen, an author who has always given voice to female characters in search of independence, can not fail to catch the eye). The character, defined by screenwriter Sally Wainwright as one of the “Most exciting, thrilling and brilliant in British history”, has been the subject of several BBC projects, including the 2010 film The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister and the documentary Revealing Anne Lister. Few in Italy know it, but who knows what Gentleman Jack, directed by three women, Wainwright, Sarah Harding and Jennifer Perrott, does not help shed light on its incredible story (for those who miss it live, the series will also be available On Demand on Sky, Sky Go and NOW).
