The CEO of Hydrogen Europe referred to the dynamics that will inevitably lead to the predominance of green hydrogen as a means to meet energy needs but also to the opportunities that exist for Greece to become a hub for the production and transport of green hydrogen, in an event held in Athens. George Chatzimarkakis.
The European Hydrogen Association (Hydrogen Europe) is based in Brussels and represents the industrial and research sector of hydrogen technologies. It involves more than 120 industrial companies, more than 70 research organizations as well as 17 National Associations active in the field of hydrogen and fuel cells.
Hydrogen technologies are a great opportunity for Greece as they are actively linked to the broad development of RES which are already an important priority for the country and could make Greece a very important geopolitical player in the new energy reality that is being formed, said Mr. Hatzimarkakis adding that in the announcements that are expected to be made by the European Commission and the responsible vice-president G. Timmermans, the role of hydrogen will be extremely upgraded.
Due to the rapid developments in hydrogen investment in Southeastern Europe, where the existing gap is moving rapidly to fill several countries, such as Romania, Bulgaria and others, it is imperative to coordinate all stakeholders so that Greece can first in developments, to make productive investments in the coming years and not to remain a tail of developments and a mere importer of technology.
Mr. Hatzimarkakis made special mention of the first important Greek hydrogen project, the famous White Dragon, which participates in the pan-European race among another 400 competing hydrogen projects throughout Europe. The approval of the first cycle of projects is expected to be announced by Easter and a positive statement from the Greek government is required in order for the White Dragon to be able to gain the lead.
As stressed by the Regional Governor of Western Macedonia (where the White Dragon is planned to be implemented) George Kasapidis, the project has now been submitted in the framework of the Important Projects of Common European Interest, Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI). It is already in the second phase of its evaluation by the European Union and specifically by the Directorate-General for Competition, in the phase of pre-notification in the first wave of hydrogen projects. We hope that the whole process will be completed immediately with the final notification of the White Dragon project as IPCEI, said Mr. Kasapidis, adding that then the process of finalizing the necessary financial resources for its financing will begin, between our country and the European Commission.
