There was a time when the comedy “Friends”, with Matthew Perry, and the drama “ER”, with George Clooney, were among the most successful series of the moment.
Clooney reflected on those days and Perry’s recent passing in an interview with the portal deadline. He said he had known the actor who played Chandler since he was 16 years old.
“We used to play paddle tennis [um jogo parecido com tênis] together,” recalled Clooney. “He is about 10 years younger than me. And he was a great, funny, funny, funny kid.”
Clooney said Perry made it clear at the time that he just wanted to “be part of a normal comedy” and that that would make him “the happiest man in the world.”
“He was probably one of the best of all time. And he wasn’t happy,” Clooney said. “It didn’t bring him joy, happiness or peace. And to see that happen — we were at Warner Bros., we were next to each other — it was hard to watch because we didn’t know what was happening to him.”
Perry detailed her history with addiction and substance abuse in her 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir.”
“We knew he wasn’t happy and I had no idea he was taking like 12 Vicodin pills a day and all the things he talked about, all that hurtful stuff,” Clooney added, referring to Perry’s reports in your book.
“And it also just goes to show that success and money and all these things don’t automatically bring happiness. You have to be happy with yourself and your life”, added the actor.
