George Floyd: The trial of white police officer Derek Sauvin accused of African-American death has begun

The long-awaited trial of the police officer accused of killing the African-American George Floyd began today, with the jury selection process, nine months after the tragedy that led to a series of mobilizations, last summer, of the Black Lives Matter movement in the USA.

The Minneapolis court started this phase of the trial with a delay of one day, due to the ongoing debate on which charges will be brought against Derek Sauvin.

On May 25, 2020, the 44-year-old white police officer knelt for almost nine minutes in the neck of Floyd, who had fallen to the ground next to a patrol car and was protesting that he could not breathe. The video of the incident made the rounds of the internet and sparked large-scale demonstrations against racism and police violence around the world.
