George Floyd: The way is open for the imposition of a heavy sentence on Derek Chovin

Several aggravating facts against police officer Derek Chovin, who was found guilty of his murder George Floyd, found a judge on USA. In this way he paved the way for the imposition of a severe sentence in this historic case.

In a panel released today (12/05), Judge Peter Cahill, who is due to sentence the police officer on June 25, listed four factors that will allow him to be released from the sentences in force in Minnesota, according to which Chovin faces up to 12.5 years in prison.

The policeman “Abused the position of trust and power”, “Treated George Floyd with great cruelty”, acted “Presence of four children” and “Committed his crime in synergy”, wrote the judge.

However, according to the APE-MPE, in his board Cahill rejected an argument of the prosecutors. For him, Floyd “was not in a particularly vulnerable position,” despite drug use and handcuffs after resisting arrest.

On May 25, in Minneapolis, four police officers attempted to arrest George Floyd, who was suspected of using a counterfeit $ 20 bill. To subdue him, they handcuffed him and threw him to the ground.

Chovin pressed Floyd’s neck with his knee for almost 10 minutes, despite calls from the unfortunate African-American and passers-by watching the incident.

The dramatic event, recorded on video and spread on the internet, sparked mass protests around the world against racism and police violence.

After several weeks of trial, on April 20, the police officer was convicted of murder and immediately imprisoned. His three colleagues will stand trial in August for complicity.
