George Papandreou has been elected President of the Committee for Democracy of the Council of Europe

The former Prime Minister, Achaia MP of the Movement for Change and President of the Socialist International, George A. Papandreou, was elected yesterday, Chairman of the Committee for Democracy of the Council of Europe.

It is a new committee set up by the Council of Europe to look at new challenges – such as digital transformation and the use of artificial intelligence applications – but also innovative ideas – such as new forms of participatory democracy – for the modern functioning of democracy.

In his first speech to the members of the Committee, George Papandreou stated, among other things:

“Democracy today faces new and old challenges. The debate over democracy has become global.

The key to loving democracy lies in gaining a better understanding of the ways in which a rich and diverse understanding of democracy can go hand in hand with our values, beliefs, concerns, interests and lifestyles. It is time to look for innovative practices, but also to renew our understanding of the key issues of democracy, so that we can meet new challenges, such as technology or globalization. “But also to broaden our understanding of democracy itself – beyond our national experiences – by learning from each other and from recent lessons around the world.”
