George Tsounis: Greece-US relations are at the highest level of all time

Greek-American relations are at the highest level of all time, the candidate stressed US Ambassador in GREECE George James Tsounis during its formal hearing by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, chaired by the senator Robert Menendez.

In his presentation at the hearing, George Tsounis pointed out that if his appointment is ratified, he will arrive in Athens at a critical time for the Greek-American relations.

Special mention was made to Strategic Dialogue between the two countries, noting that it has helped identify key pillars of the relationship, including defense and security co-operation.

According to the APE BPE, the candidate for ambassador highlighted that Greece continues to score progress on all fronts, as it seeks economic revival, to overcome the challenges of the pandemic, to face tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. “What is happening in Greece is important, not only for Greece, but for the region of the Southeastern Mediterranean, NATO, the EU and the USA,” he noted.

At the same time, he stated that if his appointment is ratified, the top goals in terms of economy and trade will be focused on efforts to accelerate his trade and of investment opportunities.

He further noted that Greece and the United States have made great progress in energy cooperation and stressed that if his appointment is ratified he will encourage Greece to invest in renewable energy sources, as well as in projects important for regional energy security, including the Interconnection with Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia, the floating storage and regasification unit in Alexandroupolis, interconnections that can support both natural gas and renewable sources.

He estimated that it exists greater area of ​​cooperation for US investments in renewable energy.

He also said that the United States is benefiting from a strong and growing bilateral defense relationship with the NATO ally, Greece. In this context, he pledged that if his appointment is ratified, he will continue to deepen this crucial relationship. Particularly noteworthy, he added, is the long-standing US military presence in Souda, of which the army made about 2,500 flights and 143 ship visits in 2021 alone.

Referring to ties between the peoples of Greece and the USA, George Tsounis said that it is the foundation of the Greek-American relationship and stressed that he will work with Greek cultural institutes and the NGOs, citizens, the Diaspora to cultivate them.

It is pointed out that the Greek-American businessman George James Tsounis is President Joe Biden’s proposal for the post of US Ambassador to Athens. Mr Tsounis’s candidacy must be approved by a Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Menendez welcomed Tsuni’s candidacy

The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee welcome George Tsounis’s candidacy for the post of US Ambassador to Greece and stressed, in his speech, that our country is a critical ally of the US, a strategic partner, a link for security and democracy in the Eastern Mediterranean. As the birthplace of democracy, he continued, Greece continues to be a beacon of freedom in Southeastern Europe.

THE Robert Menendez He pointed out that in recent years the United States has taken several important steps towards strengthening the strategic partnership with Greece. In particular, he referred to the ratification by Congress of the strong cross-party support in Greece, with the landmark law on the security and energy partnership in the Eastern Mediterranean being a milestone (EastMed Act) of 2019. In addition, he referred to the agreement on the US-Greece Defense and Interparliamentary Partnership, as well as to the signing of the amending protocol to the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement by Foreign Ministers Nikos Dendias and Anthony Blinken.

Addressing George Tsouni, Robert Menendez said that if his appointment is ratified, he will inherit the strongest Greek-American relations in history. He noted that “you know Greece and the dynamics of the region well” and expressed his belief in the abilities of George Tsounis to lead Greek-US relations in new era.
