Giorgia Meloni, the likely next prime minister of Italywill be “the most far-right prime minister since Mussolini”comment on it CNN following the results of yesterday’s parliamentary elections in the country. “The far right wins the elections in Italy for the first time and the coalition of conservatives, meta-fascists and populists under Giorgia Meloni receives 44% in both the House and the Senate,” wrote the Spanish newspaper El PaÃs.
According to the British GuardianMeloni’s party “Brothers of Italy” (FdI) has “neo-fascist origins”.
Russia’s Rossiya-24 notes that the election is likely to lead to a “political restructuring of Europe,” citing Portuguese far-right leader Andre Ventura.
In French Le Monde this is a “historic” victory for Meloni, while the Finnish Helsingin Sanomat describes the winner of the Italian elections as “successor of fascism”.
The Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet estimates that it will be difficult for the right/far-right coalition to last more than two years due to internal tensions.
Italy is “at risk” with FdI victory, but “there will be no turn to extremism” with the election of the country’s first female and most far-right prime minister since World War II, experts say Financial Times.
“Europe is headed for yet another turn to the extreme right”, comment the New York Times with British BBC to broadcast the news “the extreme right Georgia Meloni is expected to win the elections and become the country’s first female prime minister,” without commenting further.
Far-right parties in Europe are celebrating
The leader of the far-right National Alarm in France, the Marine Le Pen, wrote on Twitter: “The Italian people have decided to take their fate into their own hands by electing a patriotic government in favor of the country’s national sovereignty. Congratulations to Giorgia Meloni and (League leader) Matteo Salvini for defying the threats of an anti-democratic and arrogant EU to achieve this great victory.”

Le Pen’s niece, Marion Marechal, who is vice-president of the also far-right party Reconquête! of Eric Zemur, hailed the FdI’s victory: “he managed to resist, he managed to create unity,” tweeted the granddaughter of National Front founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, who is married to FdI member Vincenzo Sofo.
“Well done Georgia Meloni for this historic win. It’s good news for the defense of our culture,” she commented on Twitter, attaching a photo of herself with Meloni.
For his part, the French MEP of Le Pen’s party, Mr Jordan Bardellacommented that the Italians had “taught a humiliating lesson” to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who last week said the Commission has the means to use if Italy fails to follow EU regulations in the event of election of the extreme right.
“No kind of threat can stop democracy. The people of Europe are raising their heads and taking their destiny back into their own hands,” he commented.
In Hungary, Balazs Orbán, the director of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s political office, tweeted: “Congratulations to Giorgia Meloni, Matteo Salvini and (Forza Italia leader) Silvio Berlusconi on today’s election! In these difficult times, we need more than ever friends with a common vision and approach to Europe’s challenges.”
THE Santiago Abascalthe leader of Spain’s far-right Vox party, wrote on Twitter, as reported by international agencies and relayed by the Athens News Agency: “Giorgia Meloni has shown the way to a proud, free Europe of sovereign nations that can work together for the security and well-being of all ».
“Great win! Congratulations!”, the Polish Prime Minister commented on Facebook Mateusz Moravieski.
