Her reference to “immigrant blackmail” towards Greece

In this position, Giorgia Meloni remained firm, as shown by her placement in a speech in April 2021. A speech, through which she – now prime minister in waiting of Italy – called on Europe to definitively cancel Turkey’s status as candidate for membership in the European Union. Meloni explained this attitude by saying that the problem, for example, is not Islam, but the fact that Erdogan is using Islam for political reasons.

He referred to the less and less freedoms that existed in Turkey, he spoke of a regime that is submerging the country in Islam, but not for religious reasons but for political ones. And he also referred to Greece, speaking of migrant blackmail on the part of Turkey.

“We can no longer accept immigration blackmail towards a member state of the European Union, such as Greece. The Union should act so that Syrian refugees can return home and defend its borders against illegal immigration. We can no longer accept the provocations in the eastern Mediterranean against Cyprus, the sending of mercenary jihadists to Artsakh, the expansionist policy in Libya,” he said at the time.

Now, having now won the Italian election, it will be interesting to see if he stays on the same line.
