Tens of thousands of people gathered in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, on Friday to demand their country’s EU membership.
The demonstration followed EU leaders Ukraine and Moldova being granted EU candidate status, while Georgia was given the prospect of formally joining the EU summit as soon as it completes reforms.
Protesters also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, arguing that his government did not adequately promote Georgia’s bid to become an EU candidate, Georgian media reported.
Protest organizers outside parliament called for a transitional government.
“If the government does not want to hear the wishes of the Georgian people, we will (…) show them the wrath of the Georgian people, as they have never seen it before,” said one speaker at the rally.
Georgia applied in Brussels in March for EU candidate status, which Garibashvili described as a “milestone” on the country’s path to European integration.
