Gerdau brings sustainability and innovation to Rock in Rio Brasil 2022

Gerdau entered into a partnership with Rock in Rio Brasil 2022 and will be the festival’s official steel and steel supplier for the Mundo Stage, where the main concerts will take place, with big names in national music such as Ivete Sangalo, Alok, Sepultura and Djvan , and international as Iron Maiden, Justin Bieber, Guns n’ Roses, Dua Lipa, Green Day, Cold Play, among others.

The partnership is due to the union and purpose between Gerdau and Rock in Rio to positively impact society. The Mundo Stage, which will be made of Gerdau steel, a 100% recyclable product, will gain proportions never seen before in the history of the festival, which has been held since 1985 here in Brazil. Its modular structure will have almost 200 tons of steel – equivalent to the manufacture of 200 cars – which will be used in the scenography with an imposing and modern look. Light spots will be studded in the steel, which will reflect and compose the scenic lighting.

The launch of the partnership took place on May 6, at an event in Rio de Janeiro. On the occasion, the singer Ivete Sangalo was honored, as she is the artist who most often played on the Mundo Stage and will also be in this year’s edition of the festival. Ivete received from Gerdau’s CEO, Gustavo Werneck, a replica of the Mundo Stage with elements that represent the steel recycling process.

With more than 100 linear meters in width and a height proportional to a 10-story building, the colossal structure of Palco Mundo will symbolize the return of Rock in Rio after the Covid-19 pandemic.

This emblematic comeback comes with the responsibility of serving as an example and inspiration for the public. The festival’s spreading power, combined with Gerdau’s production model, which is the largest recycler of ferrous scrap in Latin America, form the perfect partnership in this changing world and place them as part of the solutions to society’s dilemmas and challenges.

“We are very proud to take Gerdau steel to the biggest music and entertainment festival on the planet. The same steel that generates thousands of jobs, recycles more than 11 million tons of scrap and provides mobility and construction solutions will give stage to some of the greatest artists in the world, bringing hope and joy to the thousands of people who attend the festival. This partnership with Rock in Rio, which goes far beyond steel, uniting technology and knowledge, reinforces the process of modernization and innovation that Gerdau has gone through”, says Gustavo Werneck, CEO of Gerdau.

Currently, Gerdau is the largest Brazilian steel producer, one of the main suppliers of long steel in the Americas and of special steel in the world. Present in 9 countries, it has more than 36 thousand direct and indirect employees in all its operations.

Steel is a 100% recyclable material, which can be recycled infinite times without losing its properties. Recycling has positive effects in mitigating climate change: it saves natural resources, reduces energy consumption and the emission of greenhouse gases.

A pioneer in recycling in its market, Gerdau is proud to work in line with ESG practices. It is currently the largest scrap metal recycler in Latin America, with this, 73% of the steel produced is made from this material.

Every year, 11 million tons of scrap are transformed into various steel products. This production model, based on the use of recycled and renewable sources, guarantees a world-renowned position in the sector.

Today, it has one of the lowest average greenhouse gas emissions – 0.90 t of CO₂e per ton of steel – which represents approximately half of the global average for its sector, which is 1.89 t of carbon dioxide. CO₂e per ton of steel, according to 2020 data released by World Steel Association (worldsteel). By 2031, the company’s carbon emissions will decrease to 0.83 t of CO₂e per ton of steel. Also, the company has assumed the ambition to be carbon neutral by 2050.

In addition to the environmental sector, the recycling process acts directly on social and governance, as it includes thousands of cooperatives and people in its income generation chain, impacting more than 1 million people.

As can be seen, the partnership between the giants Gerdau and Rock in Rio proves that it is possible to include sustainability and the ESG pillars in all areas. And yet, positively influence thousands of Brazilians in the quest to shape a better future.
