German anti-monopoly experts intend to delve deeper into the relationship between Facebook and Oculus

Germany’s antitrust authority has said it is expanding its investigation into Facebook’s abuse of links between its social media sites and Oculus virtual reality products.

The move comes after a law came into force earlier this month that sets new rules for “businesses of prime importance to market competition”.

“An ecosystem that spans across different markets – an almost undeniable position of economic power – is particularly characteristic in this respect,” said Federal Cartel Head Andreas Mundt.

“Given the strong presence of Facebook in the market with the social network of the same name, WhatsApp and Instagram, this position can be considered as existing. This is the first time that we have applied the new provisions, ”he added.

While antitrust oversight in the European Union falls primarily within the purview of its executive director in Brussels, Mundt has taken an active approach to Facebook and what he sees as an abuse of the company’s dominant market position.

In February 2019, Mundt ordered Facebook to restrict the collection of user data, which resulted in a legal battle that has not yet ended.
