German elections: SPD increases pressure to form government

The first exploratory conversations with them Greens and Liberal party (FDP) could take place this week, according to the head of the Social Democrat parliamentary group (SPD) Rolf Mitzenich.

He also called the candidate for Chancellor of the Christian Democrats and Christian Socialists (CDU / CSU) Armin Lassett to stop trying to become chancellor.

According to the APE news agency, citing the dpa news agency, the SPD parliamentary group was formed today, two days after election result, in the Federal Parliament (Bundestag). Prior to the meeting, Mitsenich stated:

“We have invited the Greens and the Liberal Party (FDP) to enter into exploratory talks with us this week, if they wish. The SPD is ready to conduct not only fast, but also reliable conversations “.

“The issue of red lines in the talks, ie the non-negotiable content of certain positions, does not arise at present. Important red lines for the SPD would be minimum wages, housing and reorganization in the face of the climate crisis.

But we will not hold public coalition negotiations “, he added and called on the Greens and the FDP to come with different way in discussions than after the previous elections in 2017.

“I think it should be clear to both small parties that what they did then (…) does not fit on the occasion, “he said.

However, this year the Greens and the FDP announced that they would initially like to do so preliminary talks with each other in order to explore commonalities. According to a Spiegel report, these talks are expected to begin on September 29.

“Armin Lassett is the loser”

“Armin Lassett must finally realize that has not received the order of German citizens. The candidate of the Christian Democrats and Christian Socialists (CDU / CSU) is the loser. “Lassett does not provide any certainty to the country and does not give it any clear direction,” Mitsenich said in a video posted on Twitter.

The co-president of the SPD Norbert Walter-Bourgeois was openly in favor of the party members voting for the approval of the coalition agreement. In the newspapers of the Funke Journalistic Group he said that “the vote of the members is a choice. The form of participation will be decided during the negotiations. “In any case, it can not be expected that the party members will ‘swallow’ important decisions taken from the top and that they are not allowed to have a say,” he stressed.
