German Eurofighter fighter jets arrived at an air base in eastern Romania today as part of a force deployment on the east side of NATO amid rising tensions over the deployment of Russian troops on Ukraine’s border, according to a Defense Ministry statement.
The three Eurofighters and about 60 soldiers, along with Italian and Romanian forces, will step up surveillance missions over the next three weeks. German air forces had undertaken similar missions, along with British, in 2021 in Romania.
They will be stationed at Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base on the Black Sea, where a squadron of 1,000 Americans was recently flown from Wilsek, Germany. This force was added to the 900 troops that Washington rotates in Romania, which borders Ukraine to the north.
Earlier this week, NATO told its military commanders that plans were being drawn up for new battle groups in central and southeastern Europe, and accused Russia of sending more troops to areas near Ukraine instead of withdrawing its forces.
Diplomats say four new units of about 4,000 troops could be deployed in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia, marking the biggest change in NATO’s military standing since moving troops to the Baltic and Baltic states. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
A German military convoy of 60 vehicles with 130 men arrived in Lithuania today. This is almost half of the planned reinforcements of the German-led NATO battle group in the country.
Earlier in the day, US President Joe Biden said there was now all indication that Russia was planning to invade Ukraine.
