German Foreign Minister Anne Burbok visits eastern Ukraine

Strikingly shocked, German Foreign Minister Alena Berbock saw the ruins of a house near the eastern Ukrainian front today.

“I’m very moved by the fact that here, right next to the beach, which should be one of the most beautiful places in the country, one can really feel what happened years ago,” Burbock said during a visit to a former resort, near the port of Mariupol.

“From one day to the next, people have lost everything I had, children’s toys are still lying on the side of the road, houses are destroyed. And what was once a holiday destination is now visible evidence that we have a war in the middle of Europe.” he added.

Burbok flew to eastern Ukraine after talks Monday in Kiev with Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba as part of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the crisis with Russia. Ukraine encourages such tours so that its allies are aware of the reality of the conflict between the separatists and the Ukrainian army in the Donbas region. According to Kiev, 15,000 people have been killed in the area since 2014.

Russia has deployed more than 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border but denies planning an attack, as NATO members fear.
