German Foreign Minister sees civil war in Myanmar

In Myanmar A civil war could break out after the military coup on February 1, warned German Foreign Minister Haiko Maas.

“The military has brought Myanmar to the brink of disaster in just a few weeks. “More than 500 people have already been killed, thousands more have fled,” Maas said in an interview published today in the Funke newspaper.

The German Foreign Minister urged all actors to increase pressure on the military regime to agree to participate in talks with Myanmar’s partners in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“No one in the region wants Myanmar to be plunged into a civil war – not even those who are not interested in democracy remaining in the country,” he said.

The violent suppression of protests with daily central demand the restoration of democracy, the forces of the military junta have killed at least 550 people, including 46 children, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, Burmese NGOs.

At least 2,751 people have been detained and many have “disappeared” after being brought in by military forces, while at least 126 arrest warrants are pending.

Burmese generals are deaf to international outcry and defy sanctions imposed by Western governments, especially those of the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union.
