Group of Seven countries will continue to strongly oppose Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, its foreign minister said. GermanyAnalena Burbock, before the G7 meets.
“Now the question is to show Putin our determination that he will not achieve his goals even through wear and tear.”Burbok said today from Seoul, before departing for Japan for the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Karuizawa near Nagano.
“As the G7, we are strong and united because we know exactly what we stand for: an international order in which the rule of law and international law prevail over the law of the strong.”, Burbock said. As “crisis team in permanent action”the G7 of economically powerful democracies faced Russian aggression last year “one obstacle after another: with winter aid for the people of Ukraine, with Russian sanctions and the ceiling on the price of oil. With our support, Ukraine withstood the energy war and Russia’s winter offensive”Burbock said. “At the Japan meeting, we will strengthen our commitment.”
G7 foreign ministers plan to discuss the Russia’s war against Ukraine from the evening until the day after tomorrow Tuesday as well as how to deal with an increasingly dynamic China internationally as well as developments in the Indo-Pacific region. “As democracies, we are successful in systemic competition with authoritarian powers when our partners and friends around the world trust us. We must avoid our unity being misinterpreted as demarcation by others or new rifts being opened”Burbock said.
The consultations in Karuizawa are of a preparatory nature in view of its summit G7 in Hiroshima, Japan next month, which Chancellor Olaf Solz is expected to attend. Apart from Germany, the G7 includes France, Italy, Japan, Canada, the USA and Britain. Japan holds the rotating presidency of the G7 this year.
