German Foreign Minister: We need actions and not words from Russia

German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock said on Tuesday that Russia must take concrete measures, such as troop withdrawals, to de-escalate tensions with Ukraine.

“Any real step towards de-escalation would be a source of hope,” Burbok told a news conference with her Spanish counterpart after Russia said some troops were returning to the base after exercises near Ukraine.

The same the Russian president announced that “a decision was made for a partial withdrawal of troops”, without giving further details.

“It is now up to Russia to begin the process of de-escalation and to support it with very concrete steps, such as the withdrawal of troops,” Burbok said.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Alvarez reiterated his feelings, saying that if confirmed, any partial withdrawal of Russian troops would be “extremely new” and that it was up to the Kremlin to make the next move:

“We must not underestimate the enormous tension on the Ukrainian border at the moment … The ball is in Russia’s court.”

He said war was not inevitable and that diplomacy remained the best solution to the crisis.

He said Russia’s military presence near the border was unjustified and there was no defense reason for such a large force.
