Germany’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contracted by 0.2% in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the third quarter, according to preliminary data released this Monday (30) by Destatis, as the country’s statistics agency is known.
The result frustrated the expectations of analysts consulted by the The Wall Street Journalwhich predicted stability in Europe’s largest economy in the last quarter of last year.
In the annual comparison, the German GDP expanded 1.1% between October and December. In this case, the consensus in the survey of the WSJ was a 1.3% increase.
For all of 2022, the German economy grew 1.8% year-on-year, according to Destatis, which revised downwards its initial estimate of a 1.9% gain.
Destatis also revised its calculation for GDP for the third quarter compared to the second, from a high of 0.4% to an increase of 0.5%.
