Germany’s health minister said today he will push for more prescriptions of Pfizer’s coronavirus pill from family doctors to reduce severe cases of the disease.
“A system involving family doctors will be set up to administer this very rarely used life-saving drug more regularly,” he tweeted on Sunday, adding that there were sufficient stocks.
The pill, which won conditional European marketing approval in January, is given to infected people who are at high risk of becoming seriously ill.
In his tweet, Lauterbach cited trial results showing that this treatment can reduce the risk of hospitalization in the elderly by 90% when taken early after infection.
Pfizer said Thursday it is seeking full U.S. approval for Paxlovid, which is currently available there with an emergency-use license.
Deaths and intubations following COVID infections have risen again in Germany since late June, due to the more virulent subvariants of the Omicron strain, after a steady decline for about three months.
