German industrial production rises in February, says federal agency

German industrial production rose for the fifth straight month in February, probably the latest in a series that economists say is unlikely to continue due to the war in Ukraine.

The Federal Statistics Office said industrial production rose 0.2% on the month after a downwardly revised increase of 1.4% in January. A Reuters poll pointed to expectations of stability in February.

The Economy Ministry said the production gap caused by the shortage of materials, making it difficult to fulfill orders, is not expected to be reduced soon due to the uncertainty caused by the war.

“It can be assumed that the war will initially slow down the recovery of industrial activity,” the ministry said.

The data “sends the latest signal of what Germany’s economy might have looked like if the war in Ukraine had not happened,” said Carsten Brzeski of ING Economics.
