German interior minister calls on Germany’s Muslims to condemn Hamas attacks

The German interior minister on Tuesday (21/11) called on Muslim organizations in her country to clearly condemn the attacks launched by Hamas on October 7 against him Israelin an interview he gave today to the public television ARD.

“I expect Muslim organizations to clearly position themselves and take their responsibility in society”said Nancy Fezer as reported by the Athens News Agency citing AFP.

They should “clearly condemn” the October 7 attack and not settle for a “yes but but”. “This should be clear, we are on Israel’s side,” he added.

Some Muslim organizations “fully take” their responsibility, “others don’t,” he pointed out. The voices of organizations that “defend our values” must be “louder,” he continued.

The October 7 Hamas attack, the deadliest ever carried out on Israeli soil, killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians. More than 240 people were taken hostage by the Islamist Palestinian movement during this unprecedented massacre.

Since then, at least 13,300 people have been killed in Israeli shelling of Gaza Stripincluding at least 5,600 children, according to the Hamas government.

Feser made these statements before the start of a two-day conference in Berlin with the participation of representatives of the German government, the country’s Muslim organizations, representatives of the Jewish community and the Churches.

The fight against anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim racism are the main topics of this conference which is presented as a space for “dialogue” in a context of tensions in Germany, as everywhere in Europe, due to the war between Israel and Hamas.

About 5.5 million people who profess the Muslim faith live in Germany, half of whom have German citizenship, according to the German Islamic Conference, a cooperation body between the German government and Muslim organizations.

Muslims represent 6.6% of the country’s populationa percentage that makes them the second largest religious group, behind Christians (of all Churches), which are 45 million, about half the population of Germany.

Germany, where Israel’s security is considered “a matter of national interest due to the country’s historical responsibility for the Holocaust,” has one of Europe’s largest Jewish communities. The government estimates that there are about 200,000 people, of which about 100,000 practice their religious duties.

Earlier this month, Chancellor Scholz promised Jews they would “never again” suffer from anti-Semitism in Germany on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the night of anti-Jewish pogroms under the Nazis.
