The German government yesterday, Wednesday, approved a bilateral solidarity agreement with Italy, in order to ensure the supply of natural gas in case of an emergency.
The German-Italian agreement is expected to be formally signed and enter into force on March 29, on the sidelines of the Energy Transition Dialogue, by Economy and Climate Policy Minister Robert Habeck and Italian Environment Transformation Minister Roberto Cing. A spokesman for the Ministry of Economy stressed that “European legislation obliges member states to supply gas to their troubled neighbors in a show of solidarity”.
Germany has already signed similar agreements with Austria and Denmark, and is in consultation with other Member States.
Italy imports more than 40% of its gas from Russia, but the government of Mario Draghi has announced that it aspires to become independent within 24-36 months.
