The Ministry of Justice of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia will hold the first auction for the sale of confiscated bitcoins, with prices for cryptocurrencies being set below market prices.
German law enforcement agencies have confiscated a total of 215 BTC from the criminals and are now planning to sell them. Several lots are displayed on the state auction platform.
The Justice Department values each coin at 54,000 euros ($ 62,700). At the same time, smaller shares (0.1 BTC and 0.5 BTC) are more expensive, while a “set” of 10 BTC is sold at a discount – 503 530 euros. So far, only 4 applications have been submitted for this lot.
Most of the bitcoins were obtained by German law enforcement agencies during investigations into the activities of the darknet markets. The proceeds from the sale of confiscated BTC funds will go to the treasury of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Such auctions are not uncommon, but there are also curious cases. For example, in August, the Swedish police returned $ 1.5 million worth of BTC to a drug dealer, because due to the rise in the bitcoin rate, the price of the seized crypto assets exceeded the value of the illegally obtained funds.
