The crisis in Ukraine will play a role in the process of approving the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Friday, adopting a more “aggressive” tone than Chancellor Olaf Solz.
Speaking in Warsaw, Habeck said the approval process would be strictly in line with European law. “On the other hand, the geopolitical assessment will always affect the approval of Nord Stream 2,” he added.
Germany has delayed the approval of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline at least until the second half of 2022, but has not canceled the almost completed project. US President Joe Biden said Monday that the pipeline would be shut down if Russia invaded Ukraine.
Habeck also stressed that every diplomatic effort must be made to de-escalate the “dangerous” situation around Ukraine.
“Every diplomatic effort must be made to de-escalate this situation,” Habeck told reporters in Warsaw, adding that Russia would face harsh sanctions if diplomacy failed.
“I say this knowing that any sanction naturally comes at a cost to everyone,” he added.
At the same time, Ukraine expects quadripartite talks with Russia, Germany and France to take place more frequently after the last round of such talks in Berlin, Andriy Germak, Ukraine’s presidential spokesman, said on Friday.
Ukrainian and Russian officials met in the German capital on Thursday to discuss ending the conflict in eastern Ukraine, with tensions rising after more than 100,000 Russian troops gathered near the Ukrainian border in recent weeks.
Germak said all sides agreed on the need to maintain the ceasefire.
