German Ministry of Foreign Affairs: We must start saving energy to put pressure on Russia

The German Economy Minister stressed that dependence on Russia will be reduced if citizens reduce energy consumption.

The Germans should start saving energy now in order for their country to become independent of Russia’s fossil fuels, said Economy Minister Robert Habeck.

Germany has come under pressure to cut gas and oil imports from Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, with many complaining that the proceeds from these sales provide Moscow with vital resources to continue the war.

Hubeck pointed out that Germany would be less dependent on energy imports from Russia if citizens reduced their energy consumption, and suggested that his compatriots use the train or bicycle whenever possible instead of their car.

“Every kilometer you do not drive helps us to get rid of Russian energy more easily. We also protect the climate,” he said in an interview with the Funke news group.

According to him, it is possible for any person to reduce energy consumption by 10%, while he added that employers should also help their employees in this direction, giving them the opportunity to work from home.

“Whenever possible, one can work from home again for one or two days a week, initially on a voluntary basis,” Hubeck explained.
