Borussia Dortmund said on Sunday (7) that managers of the German club had spoken with defender Nico Schulz about a complaint of domestic violence filed against him, but that at this moment they will not take any action.
The player’s ex-girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time, filed a criminal complaint against him for domestic violence in 2020, with an investigation underway.
The club said it had met with the player and his advisers to discuss the matter.
“Nico Schulz has informed us that he will defend himself against these accusations with the help of a lawyer and, in addition, requests that the presumption of innocence be applied,” the club said.
“The allegations that have been made – of which Borussia Dortmund were unaware until the media reports broke – are extremely serious and shocking for the club.”
“Borussia Dortmund take them very seriously and distance themselves from any form of violence.”
The club, which kicked off their Bundesliga season with a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, said they could not take any action at this early stage of the investigation.
“Borussia Dortmund are not part of the process and have no view on the investigation files or the criminal charges that are apparently pending.”
“As this is a pending case in its early stages, and the factual and legal situation is extremely uncertain for Borussia Dortmund as it stands today, we are still not able to make reliable and legally sound decisions regarding labor law and disciplinary measures. ”, added the club.
Schulz, 29, who also played for Hertha Berlin, Hoffenheim and Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga, has played for the German national team 12 times.
