Politicians in Germany across the political spectrum want former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to be sanctioned for his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and for backing him after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Schroeder, who served as Germany’s chancellor from 1998 to 2005, chairs the supervisory board of giant Russian state-owned energy company Rosneft and chairs the board of directors of the Nord Stream oil company.
The former chancellor has not criticized Putin after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Schroeder “should be included in the list of sanctions against those who profit from Putin,” Moritz Kerner, a leading member of the Free Democrats (FDP), told Handelsblatt today, adding that the former chancellor was the most important man. Putin in Germany.
Roderick Kiesewetter, an expert on the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Conservative Party, also called for Schroeder to be sanctioned.
“The fact that Schroeder is still not distancing himself from Putin and Russia only shows how deep he is in Putin’s service,” he said.
Greens Reinhard Beatofer also called for sanctions against Schroeder and other former European politicians “sold to Vladimir Putin”.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Schroeder defended the Kremlin chief against war crimes allegations, saying the massacre was likely ordered by junior officials and not by Putin.
