German port authorities rescue tanker drifting unruly in Baltic

German authorities have launched a major rescue operation in the Baltic Sea to help a tanker which Berlin says belongs to the Russian “shadow fleet” used by Russia to export its oil despite sanctions. . The 274-meter-long Panamanian-flagged tanker Eventin issued a distress signal and for several hours drifted unruly, “at low speed, unable to maneuver” north of Rugen, Germany’s maritime emergency management center said. Germany initially sent two vessels, including a tugboat, which immobilized the Eventin. Two more tugboats were then dispatched to the area. The 24 crew members did not have to be removed from the vessel.
