German sentenced to life in prison for killing cashier who asked to wear a mask

A German court sentenced a 50-year-old man to life imprisonment this Tuesday (13), by the murder of an employee from a gas station last year. The attendant insisted that he follow the rules and wear a mask as a preventive measure against Covid-19 German media reported on Tuesday.

The shooting in the western town of Idar-Oberstein due to pandemic restrictions shocked Germans at a time when fears that the denialism about the coronavirus was turning into violence.

German news agency DPA and other media said the court found the defendant, identified only as Mario N., guilty of murder under privacy laws and sentenced him to life in prison.

He admitted to killing the 20-year-old gas station worker, but pleaded involuntary manslaughter with limited guilt. A specialist had found alcohol in his blood.

Prosecutors said the cashier asked the man to abide by the rules and wear a face mask while paying for the beer.

After initially refusing to abide by the rule and leaving the gas station, the man came back in a mask, came back wearing a mask, but pulled it down as he approached the cashier and after another brief argument shot him in the head.

The victim died immediately, and Mario N. later turned himself in at a police station, saying the pandemic’s restraining measures were causing him stress. No one at the Bad Kreuznach courthouse was immediately available to confirm the decision.
