Chancellor Olaf Solz informed that Germany will proceed to a tripartite exchange (Ringtausch) with Greece, through which older Greek weapons of the Soviet era will be given to Ukraine and in their place Athens will receive modern German tanks.
“We will provide German infantry fighting vehicles to Greece,” Soltz told reporters in Brussels after the two-day EU summit, adding that he had reached an agreement with the Greek prime minister, according to Reuters.
“The two countries’ defense ministries will work out the details and implement this agreement quickly,” he added.
According to Reuters, these are German IFV tanks.
The chancellor did not specify the type of armaments that Greece will send to Ukraine. It is worth noting, however, that the Greek army has Soviet-made TOMA BMP-1 tanks, which had been procured from the reserves of the East German army in 1993.
According to Politico, the German chancellor said he had discussed a similar exchange with Polish Prime Minister Matthew Morawiecki.
Last week, Polish President Andrei Duda accused Germany of failing to deliver on its promises to give Warsaw German tanks in exchange for Poland sending Soviet-style tanks to Ukraine.
A few hours later, issued a relevant announcement by the Ministry of Defense.
