Germany has provided “very efficient weapons, which are making a difference in the current battle” in eastern Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said during a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Monday. (12) in Berlin.
“What we deliver with our Gepard anti-aircraft tank, self-propelled Howitzer 2000 and MARS multiple rocket launcher are the weapons that are really contributing to the possibility of changing outcomes in the eastern battle as we see it today,” Scholz said.
The chancellor also pointed out that Germany has committed to delivering the Iris-T air defense system to Ukraine and that the country has decided to order more of these devices.
Despite Kiev’s increasingly urgent demands for modern tanks, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht continues to refuse to deliver these Marder or Leopard-type vehicles.
“No country has delivered Western-built infantry fighting vehicles or tanks so far,” Lambrecht explained during a panel discussion on national security strategy at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP).
Germany has delivered weapons systems that require training, such as the Howitzer-2000, the minister stressed, but noted that it was a matter of urgency to deliver “Soviet-designed tanks that can be used for immediate combat in Ukraine”.
The German government stressed that it would not act unilaterally, but Scholz stressed continued support for Ukraine “as long as necessary”.
