Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht expects Turkey to eventually agree to NATO enlargement with Sweden and Finland, while calling for Turkish arguments to be taken seriously.
“The accession of two such powerful EU member states to NATO will enrich the Alliance and I am absolutely convinced that Turkey can be convinced of that as well,” said Ms. Lambrecht on the sidelines of the EU Council of Defense Ministers and called for taking into account the arguments and concerns expressed by Ankara.
The minister, however, left open whether this implies German concessions, as the previous federal government had already partially suspended arms exports to Turkey after the invasion of northern Syria in 2019.
