Was segregated in a room for most of his life: seven and a half years. An eight-year-old girl was released after spending her entire life in her grandparents’ home in Attendorn, a town of about 25,000 inhabitants east of Cologne. The German media dubbed her “Maria”: she would have been locked up by her mother since she was less than a year old.
Even though the doctors who examined her found no signs of physical abuse or malnutrition, the girl is like this. physically underdeveloped to be barely able to climb a flight of stairs. Maria can talk and walk, and explained that she had never seen a forest, never been in a meadow or got into a car. The investigators have not yet been able to understand why for which the child was hidden from the world and segregated for most of her life: her mother and grandparents would have refused to answer police questions.
Maria’s father, who was already separated from her mother at the time of her birth, told the local newspaper SauerlandKurier of having found a note on the windshield of his car when the child was about six months old: his ex-partner informed him of theintention to move to Italy with the little one. The mother, nicknamed “Rosemarie G” by the tabloid Bild, informed local authorities that she had moved to Calabria in mid-2015. In September 2015, however, the girl’s father told authorities that he had seen her mother and baby several times in Attendorn.
It was only in July of this year that local authorities have again investigated the whereabouts of the girl, after a couple living in the nearby municipality of Lennestadt informed police of rumors that an eight-year-old girl has been locked up in her grandparents’ home for years. Indeed, the mother and daughter they had never moved to Calabria: following a court order, the police found Maria at her grandparents’ home.
The prosecutor of the city of Siegen is investigating the child’s mother and grandparents for detention and ill-treatment of a minor. The woman faces up to 10 years in prison.
