Finance Minister Christian Lindner said last month that the supplementary budget should only fund expenditures related to Ukraine, but it was finally decided to allocate funds for the economic consequences of the pandemic.

“It’s official now: the finance minister is the king of debt,” said Christian Haas, a spokesman for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU / CSU). The Union adds to the budget all 100 billion of the special fund for the modernization of the armed forces, raising the total borrowing to 240 billion. The government, however, claims that the 100 billion will be allocated over a period of at least five years and can not be added to the one-year budget.
